Ahh yes, my printout of "The Conscience of a Hacker" (The Hacker's Manifesto) is still hanging framed on the wall in my old room. It is a timeless expression of the hacker mentality and his defining trait: curiosity.

And yes you are correct that Emmanuel Goldstein was the "enemy of the people" in 1984, though it was left to the reader to determine whether he actually existed or was merely a fabrication of the government as a device to keep the population under control and expose traitors.

Funny you should post that. I never had read the book, but ive did enough research on the movie that alot had been derived from Orwell's 1984. Im sure you said this somewhere in there maybe i missed it, that infact Emmanuel Goldstein was actually a character in the book from what ive read. In the movie there was alot of little tiny peices of history in it. To many to account for right off the top of my head, One being the paragraph that the officer qouted from ++The Mentor++'s "Hackers Manifesto" but ive always loved the qoute
"You could sit at home, and do like absolutely nothing, and your name goes through like 17 computers a day. 1984? Yeah right, man. That’s a typo. Orwell is here now. He’s livin’ large. We have no names, man. No names. We are nameless!"
Though i dont know what it ws meaning in the book, But it did fit well into the movie and Ive been know to say it a couple times. But yeah, i thought it was quite cool that this was posted.
